What is RSS?

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is an XML-based format for sharing and distributing Web content. Using an RSS reader, you can view data feeds from various sources, such as E-Reports.net, including headlines, promotions, and links to full articles.

How do I access RSS?

RSS News Aggregators:

RSS/News Aggregators (also called Readers) will download and display RSS feeds for you. A number of free and commercial Aggregators are available for download. Many aggregators are separate, “stand-alone” programs; other services will let you add RSS feeds to a Web page.

Weblogs:

Another way many people use RSS feeds is by incorporating content into weblogs, or “blogs”. Blogs are web pages comprised of usually short, frequently updated items and web links. Blogging as a publishing tool is used for many purposes: traditional journalism, personal journals, group discussions around a topic, and many combinations in-between.

What are comments and trackbacks and how can I control them in my blog?

Comments and trackbacks are features that are common to most blogging systems and software.

A comment is a reply or feedback that a reader can leave in response to an individual entry in your blog. When reading your blog, readers click the Comment button next to an entry to leave a reply or feedback for that entry. You can then write a comment in response to a reader’s comment, therefore creating a dialog between you and your readers. A trackback is a link from an entry in another blog or Web site to an entry in your blog. When reading your blog, readers can create a trackback (or link) to the individual entry in your blog from their blog or Web site. The trackback sends a ping from the originating site to your blog, to notify it that a link was created.

If you choose to, you can disallow comments and trackbacks in your blog. Otherwise, readers can leave comments regarding individual entries in your blog and can create trackbacks to entries in your blog.

If you opt to allow comments and trackbacks to your blog, the software’s Manage Comments page lists all of the comments for each entry in your blog and the Manage Trackbacks page lists all of the trackbacks for all entries in your blog.

From the Manage Comments page you can typically reply to, view, approve, or delete comments, ban IP addresses, or mark comments as SPAM. From the Manage Trackbacks page you can view, approve, edit, or delete trackbacks, ban IP addresses, or mark trackbacks as SPAM. Banning an IP address prevents people who are accessing your blog from that IP address from writing comments or creating trackbacks, respectively.

Normally, new comments and trackbacks are not automatically published to your blog. New comments or trackbacks made by others have a status of Pending Approval until you either approve them or mark them as SPAM. Comments that you author or trackbacks that you create have a status of Draft until you approve them.

How can a blog help you?

Blogs are constantly creating new business opportunities. While some time ago blogs were almost an exclusive territory for non-professional bloggers sharing their thoughts, experiences and ideas, currently small and large business have a wide presence in the blogging world. There are a number of potential benefits of adding a blog as part of your marketing strategy or as a business model:

What is a blog?

Though there are different approaches to weblogs, they can be defined as web sites where users post entries (news, articles…), updated frequently and normally reflecting the thoughts of the blog’s creator. Those entries (posts) are typically listed in reverse chronological order (the most recent entry on the top).

Most blogs allow visitors to leave their own comments on the diverse entries or even references from other blogs (trackbacks). This communication between different blogs and bloggers is one of the main factors involved in the fast growth of the so-called “blogosphere” (the whole community of blogs) and its current influence.
